A 30,000 SF community and recreation center with gymnasium, indoor and outdoor jogging tracks, a teaching kitchen, a black-box theater, and a computer lab.

This community and recreation is designed as a gather space and programmed to include multi-functional spaces that can accommodate a range of uses. The black box theater can be reconfigured for multiple layouts and types of events. The gymnasium can accommodate multiple sports as well as spectators.

The building was designed to create outdoor spaces framed by the building. A front "porch" courtyard on the west side of the building, between the main lobby and the black box theater lobby, offers shade and gather space. Three classrooms, including a teaching kitchen, also have direct access to this courtyard. A specimen tree seen behind the front desk is nestled between the lobby and the gymnasium and can be viewed from inside the building on three sides.

The gymnasium features a connection via stairs to an outdoor jogging track. The south-facing facade of the gymnasium is allow primarily indirect light via the angled brick walls, broken by full height glass walls. The angled walls help to control solar heat gain/cooling load on the space by blocking a majority of the direct sunlight from the south. Both men's and women's locker rooms have access to the gym via a short corridor. Each of the staff offices have direct access to the gym for easy visual oversight.

The amount of glass on the exterior of the building was designed and detailed as a filter to allow the community to transition into the space gradually. There are strong visual connections between indoor and out on the two primary facades of the building, as well as through the framed outdoor areas.
